At the age of 15, I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and told that I may not live beyond 25 years old. Living with a degenerative loss of muscles, muscular dystrophy had not only taken away my physical independence, it also led to emotional struggles regarding my identity and self-worth as a person in a wheelchair.

Gradually, I became aware that strength does not come from what I could do, especially with my physical limitations. Instead, it was through overcoming trials which built my resilience that made me a stronger person. This attitude has shaped my perspective in life, and enabled me to rise beyond adversities. One could say that my heart is stronger than my muscles.

In overcoming my own challenges, I realised the need for social change, particularly on accessibility to the environment; and public awareness on disability.  Driven by this passion, I became a change maker advocating for disability inclusion over three decades.Subsequently, I founded the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore), a social service agency through which I have inspired and empowered people with muscular dystrophy to live fulfilling and dignified lives.

I believe in the power of embracing trials and obstacles in life as beyond the brokenness and pain, one can find meaning and purpose. This process will bring about a sense of inner healing or an opening to new horizons.

Struggles and hardship have taught me empathy and compassion for others in their pain. This changed me to become less focused on myself and more on others; and prepared me for my higher calling where I serve others as a servant-leader. I was also motivated to write “Shaped For A Purpose” to encourage others through their challenges or brokenness.

My story has motivated and inspired others to see opportunities beyond their own adversities. Living in a fast-paced society, our values and expectations may be influenced by society’s standards.I hope to continue to use my story to facilitate individuals to discover their own inner truths, to be compassionate, and grow and serve a higher purpose when faced with challenges.
