He was incredibly present, calm and kind. He was He was incredibly present, calm and kind.
He was the medical social worker assigned to my dad.
It was his way of being. In a huge, busy hospital building, and while some difficult news was being delivered, he was an oasis.
I was so inspired that I sent him an appreciation note.
Months later, I received a text from him asking if my appreciation note could be featured in a poster for Social Worker’s Day.
I agreed. And took this opportunity to ask him what enabled him to be this way amidst his busy workload.
With his permission, I share this stunning gem he sent me. (“Gatta” means verse.)
🔆 This person embodies everyday mindfulness at work. He does this quietly and his practice is so strong, those around him can feel it. His wellbeing flows out and touches ours.
🔆 This little incident reminds me of the simple power of appreciation. It was what opened a door for us to connect more deeply. After he sent me this message, we continued the exchange and I asked if I could feature his message in our blog, which led him to browse our blog where he found a piece on my mum’s head injury sustained at a hospital. He said he liked the reflection questions I had offered and said he may use them for an in-house retreat for medical social workers.
🔆 Curiosity about those who embody such inspiring values can bring great learning and inspiration for our own practice.
Who inspires you in your workplace?
May your appreciation and curiosity enrich your connection to them and enhance your growth.

12 years later, a 7 hour reunion. 🔆 Soul nour 12 years later, a 7 hour reunion.
🔆 Soul nourishment and Empowerment.
Those would be two words to capture the gifts from the conversation with Sonia Fevre, a client turned friend who left Singapore 12 years ago.
As we face so many crises in the world, especially one around leadership, the friendship with kindred spirits who are working towards a more caring, just, wiser world reminds me to own our heart-led leadership in our spheres of influence.
🔆 Handwritten, heartfelt, evolving message - In this photo, we are holding a book she gifted me with before she left. It’s precious because of her heartfelt, handwritten message in it.
In “The Restaurant of Love Regained” by Ito Ogawa, the chef of a little restaurant chooses the best ingredients and cooks up personalised meals for customers to touch their hearts. She likened it to the way I try to approach my service. This is such a gift we can give others - to See them deeply and let them know.
She wrote a second message on this night, 12 years after she wrote the first one. And this has the spirit of unity around a higher purpose. We are both “chefs” in our corners of the world, serving up from our hearts the most authentic offering we can to bring some joy and reduce suffering for others through our continual evolution.
These may seem like small efforts in the larger scheme of things. But when we (I mean the wider “we”, not just Sonia and I) do our best to be contemplative and heartful about what we do and who we are becoming, it is life-giving to ourselves and others.
Amidst the backdrop of a world in turmoil, this walk together felt deeply regenerative, collectively empowering, quietly transformational.
How are you gathering with kindred spirits during these times of challenge so your service is strengthened?
What questions grace the end of your day or work d What questions grace the end of your day or work day?
These are just three from a longer list John O’Donahue shares in his beautiful book, “To Bless the Space Between Us” which is a source of nourishment for me.
Every day bears gifts, even amidst challenge. With questions, we look at the gifts with openness, curiosity, compassion and gratitude for our continued growth and service.
This book is listed among many other books, movies, picture books and music that inspire us on our resource page. Enjoy. - Vadivu

Change driven by the heart has the power to transf Change driven by the heart has the power to transform not just the world, but also ourselves.
Heartivism is about activism that doesn’t burn out—it burns bright. It’s about leading with compassion, not just for the community we work for, but for ourselves and those around us. When we shift from anger to awareness, from judgment to connection, we create movements that last.
Because true change isn’t just about what we do, but how we do it and who we are becoming through the journey.
